History
The Church of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary became a Cathedral with the erection of the diocese of Badulla (separation the Province of Uva from the Central Province ) on 18th December 1972 and the appointment of its first Bishop, Most Rev. Dr. Leo Nanayakkara, O.S.B who had been from 1959 till then the Bishop of Kandy.
11th Feburay 1863 : Fr. Adrien Duffo OMI, writing to MGR. stepen semeria OMI says that
on my way back from Badulla (church)" i blessed a new church ( at Welimeda?) or (padinawela) march 3rd 1965 Mgr . Hilarion sillani O.S.B, vicar Apostolic of colombo came to badulla starting from Kandy on @3rd February and copming throug Gampola, pusellawa (rest House) and Tawalantenne, Ramboda Palagolla reaching Nuwara Eliya on 28th February. "At night we reached the Church of st. Anna at Welimada . finally we reached Badulla . Immediatly we began our apostolic work: dialogued catechism , sermons, novena in honour of the titular saint every evening; baptisms, confessions, blessing of marriage and communions evey morning .on sunday sung mass and administion of confirmation. What was done for the Christian community at Badulla was done also for the christian community of welimeda on our return journey.
